Permaculture & Demonstration Farm.
Through extensive research and consultation the Maasai people of Makuyuni determined that a permaculture and demonstration farm should be developed on 40 acres of land surrounding Nashipay Pre and Primary Maasai School to address food insecurity.
Local villagers worked diligently to install perimeter fencing, dig swales, collect and incorporate manure into the soil, and plant 20 acres of vegetable gardens and over 2,000 tree seedlings in a food forest. This was an extremely labour intensive project which left the Maasai people of Makuyuni village motivated and exited for the next phase of this project, and most importantly, with hope for the future!
The second phase of the permaculture installation was completed in May 2020 at the onset of the global pandemic, and since then the farm has been a very successful project in providing Maasai children and villagers with a healthy food supply, improving general health and reducing disease for the Maasai of the village. It has been providing training for those without formal education, and empowering the Maasai people of Makuyuni village to participate in sustainable solutions for food security and economic development.

The new surrounding of gardens and food forests of the permaculture project have made the entire Nashipay School property a beautiful environment but more importantly, it is having a huge impact on the local population and economic development in the region by addressing food security for the Maasai people of Makuyuni village.

Beyond the positive human impact of this permaculture project, the surrounding ecosystems have benefited; biological diversity of plants and wildlife have increased, degraded land has been rejuvenated, forests have begun regenerating, and ground water is being replenished.
